Do I Know My God?
“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do
you say I am?” Simon
Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the
Son of the living God.” Matthew 16: 15-16 (NIV)
In
May
2001 journalist Giles Brandeth
interviewed South African Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu. It was a powerful
experience for Brandeth,
for Desmond Tutu was suffering from prostate cancer and there was a real chance
this might be the last interview he would ever give. What might Tutu want to
talk about? Perhaps the amazing transformation in the politics of his country,
and of which he himself had a leading role. No. Here’s what he told Brandeth:
“If this is going to be my last interview, I am glad we are not going to talk
about politics. Let us talk about prayer and adoration, about faith, hope and
forgiveness.” For Tutu these are the things that are the stuff of life
and
these are on the priority list number one.
When
Jesus asked the disciples what they thought about him I think Jesus wanted to
know if He is there on priority list number one. Are the disciples ready for
what they are being prepared for? Jesus knew that the disciples were close
enough – with him through all the journeys and also witnessed everything very
closely. But what Jesus wanted to know was have they experienced him
personally. Going to church, prayer meetings, bible studies is all good. It all
helps us to understand our God more closely but the question is have we known
him personally.
To
come close is not enough. Jesus
today asks me
Have
I personally understood Him?
Have
I personally grasped
Him?
Have
I personally experienced
Him?
Have
I been
personally possessed
by
Him.
Being
Close is just
not enough!!!!
