What’s My Song in Trouble?

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take   refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior—    from violent people you save me. 2 Samuel 22:2 (NIV)

In the poem Overheard in an Orchard, Elizabeth Cheney beautifully pens down how or on whom our trust should be. Few lines of the poem

Said the Robin to the Sparrow:
"I should really like to know
Why these anxious human beings
Rush about and worry so."

Said the Sparrow to the Robin:
"Friend, I think that it must be
That they have no heavenly Father,
Such as cares for you and me."

Trouble and problem for David came one after the other. There was never a time when he didn’t have any trouble. For much of his younger adulthood he was pursued by Saul who sought to kill him. He became the king of a nation that endured wars, giants, national problems, famine, only to name a few.

David had an antidote to all the problems he was facing - Trust in a living God. This was the controlling factor in his life. David wrote a “rock” song of thanksgiving that summed up his life and relationship with God. David praised God for who He is. David recognized and lifted his voice to God his rock, his fortress, and his deliverer. David was well acquainted with anxiety and often found himself on shaky ground, but God had been a stronghold for David, and when David cried out to God in his times of distress, God delivered him. After David was delivered from the hand of Saul and all the enemies of Israel, he sang this song of praise to God for His deliverance.

David's basic philosophy for dealing with the problems and frustrations of life stated, "I pray. I trust. I keep moving."

The best way to move from the realization that these things are true to the personalization that they are true for me, is to consider the words of Jesus: “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock” (Matthew 7:24). When our life is built on Jesus, we can trust Him to be a rock in shaky times, a fortress in hard times, and a deliverer in fearful times.

Let us build our life on the solid rock of Jesus, because there is no rock like our rock, and there is no God like our God!
