Can My God Do Anything and Everything?

I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?
Jeremiah 32:27 (NIV)

A Sunday School teacher was examining her students after a series of lessons on the omnipotence of God. She asked, ''Now that we've studied all about the greatness of God, is there anything God can't do?'' Well there was dead silence. Finally, one little boy held up his hand. The teacher couldn't believe it. She had hammered for weeks and weeks about the omnipotent power of God. She looked at that young man and said, ''Well, Sammy, just what is it that God can't do?'' The little boy said, ''Well, He can't please everybody.''

Do you believe God can do anything? To intellectually comprehend that God can do anything is one thing; to practically and personally believe that God can in fact do anything is quite another. We are all bound to experience things in life that are out of our control, and in those moments when we are caught in the middle of life’s uncertainties, we will see if intellectual comprehension gives way to the practical and personal belief that God really can do anything.

Now this question was not asked of God. It was not asked about God. It was not asked to God. It was asked by God. In fact, God asked this question twice. In Genesis 18 God was talking to Abraham. He had promised Abraham a son even though Abraham's wife, Sarah, was over ninety years of age. Well Sarah overheard God's conversation with Abraham and she laughed out loud when she heard that God was going to give Abraham a son. The Lord took umbrage at what she said, and said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? (Gen 18:13-14a)

Jeremiah found himself in prison for prophesying about the impending destruction of Jerusalem. And, during this tumultuous time in Jewish history, God told Jeremiah to buy some real estate. Now, most of us might have a reaction similar to, “Seriously God? This doesn’t look like it’s a buyers’ market. After all, the Babylonians are conquering the people and seizing their land. I’m not sure that buying property is a wise investment right now”

Since the property was already in the hands of the enemy, this was definitely a bad time to buy, but Jeremiah was obedient nonetheless. He made the necessary arrangements to buy the land and secure the deed of ownership as God commanded. But Jeremiah wondered how God could make good on His promises concerning the land he was buying (Jeremiah 32:25). In essence, Jeremiah knew intellectually that God could do anything, but he was allowing a mustard seed of doubt to creep in and cause him to question practically how this could be done. God’s response to Jeremiah was short and to the point: “Is there anything too hard for Me?”

Does the power of God have a limit? The answer is a resounding no! God has infinite and unlimited power. God is able to do anything that He wills to do. Consider this. Which is easier for God to do: heal a person of a deadly disease, or heal a person of a headache? Both are equally easy for God to accomplish. When is simply a matter of whether He wills to do it or not. Remember, Jesus said something along the same lines when he declared, “With God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). We often forget that impossible is one of God’s favorite words.

At the end of the day, our hope and trust must rest in the fact that God can do anything, even though some things appear impossible to us. Our God is able because our God is all-powerful. All things are possible because He is the God of possibilities.
