Am I Thirsty For God?

You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. Psalm 63:1 (NIV)

The Limca advertisement featuring Kareena Kapoor has a tag line ‘Apni Pyaas Badhao’. This Psalm too echoes the need of increasing the thirst for God.

For King David, nothing was more important to him than his relationships with God. David wanted God more than He wanted anything else in his life because he knew that God alone could satisfy the deepest longings of his soul. The above verse is a reflection of David’s daily, passionate pursuit of God.

David began his day by seeking God early in the morning. He awoke with a fresh craving for His Creator and would spend the early morning hours pursuing the presence of God. He would pray and wait upon God: “In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly” (Psalm 5:3), he would praise and give thanks to God (Psalm 63:3–4), and when night came, he was still thinking about His heavenly Father as he lay in bed (Psalm 63:6). How wonderful to have a day filled with such a joy and gratitude for God.

Are our days filled with joy and gratitude for God? Each of us can have this type of joy, regardless of our circumstances, when we set aside the beginning of our day to spend with God. This should be a regular time in which we purpose to fill ourselves with the Word of God, willingly fall to our knees and pray to God, and submissively wait upon God.

We may think we just don’t have that kind of time. But we all have. For that we may need to make a little sacrifice, and we may have to rearrange our schedule or change our priorities. Something may need to be taken off our plate, or we may have to scratch something off our morning to-do list. If we feel that our days are just too full and finding time is totally impossible, then we may need to take a little extra effort, a little more creativity, or simply a little more diligence to fit time with God into our already full schedule. But one thing is certain: if our schedule is too full for God, then something needs to go.

We should never be content to follow God at a distance. Rather, we should be waking up every day with a hunger and a thirst for God, a craving that can only be met in His presence. If you are struggling to make this happen, then just do it for a few days and see for yourself how the Lord begins to satisfy your soul and grow your hunger for Him.
